Even in ancient times the Greeks enjoyed being scared witless with a

good hair-raising ghost story and, apparently one of theSpooky visions, dark shapes... earliest ghost

sightings took place in Athens 2,000 years ago, as recorded in a letter by a respected philosopher of the time.

The Zakynthians have their fair share of spooky tales that tell of haunted houses and entire ghost villages scattered around the island.  These creepy no-go areas are referred to as places of ‘dark shadows’ where it is whispered that bad spirits congregate.  One such place is said to be on the east-side of Laganas bay, above Crystal beach called ‘Black Shot’ referring to the black granite rocks that stud the location. On this hauntingly beautiful terrain according to traditional myth, is a ‘shadowed meeting place for devils and mischief’; the panoramic sea views across the bay of Lagana are breathtaking and the serenity of the area is more tranquil than terrifying – albeit in the light of a bright summer’s day!

The troubled ‘Tower of Domengini’ in Argassi, is a manor house with a history of haunting. Perched on the coast, the tall house would have cut a lonely spectre back in 1821 when canny islanders used its supernatural story-line to their benefit during British occupation. Would-be freedom fighters forbidden to join the cause on the mainland, left under the cover of darkness by boat from below the ‘Devil House’ as it was called, knowing that the British garrison chose, for whatever reason,  not to guard that vicinity.

By far the most entertaining stories centre on the unsettling activities of ‘Kalikanzarous’ a big word for tiny gremlins.  These bizarre creatures are easily identified by their dark skin, crazed red eyes and exceptionally hairy legs that end with a goats hoof.   Their hooves create an eerie clip-clop sound alerting you to their presence, though fortunately their appearance is limited to the twelve days of Christmas when they clatter down chimneys into unsuspecting homes to wreak havoc.  Abysmally toilet-trained, they have an inexcusable habit – that of urinating throughout the house!  Tainted household goods will fail to work, chaos ensues.  To add insult to injury these pint-sized apparitions will climb onto the shoulders of family members who can expect more than a shiver down their spines, oops!  This mayhem lasts until the eve of 6th of January when they vanish...until next year.
