At last, John and Gill have moved into their new home - it is by no means finished but it is habitable, albeit in a few rooms, they are living in the renovated part for now.
I immediately note some changes on the approach to the house, for one there’s a door and secondly it’s guarded! Zak the Airedale is clearly in residence. Actually, John salvaged the door from the original building, primed and glazed it and why not? It’s in perfect condition and a seriously secure entry door hand-forged in wrought iron with a swing out glazed panel. Many of the local houses have these types of doors though they are slowly disappearing in favour of the typically modern aluminium doors that you find all over the place.
Throughout the rest of the house the windows and patio glazing are in, to include the a large double set of patio doors off the living room that offer a magnificent panoramic views over to Marathanisi (otherwise known as Turtle island). John has also finished tiling the floors. Outside the balconies are walled with planters and awaiting Gills green fingers to plant them up.
There is still a great deal of work to do though living on-site has certainly eased the load. Johns motoring through a long list of interior jobs and plans to put in a second bathroom in the coming week. Outside it is just too hot to labour away but that hasn’t hindered the progress of mad dogs and an Englishman; the steel frame has been made in preparation for concrete steps to the garden with construction of a pool planned to follow.
Sunday afternoons are still a day-of-rest for workaholic John, which is always a good indicator that progress is on track. Both John and Gill, plus Zak are noticeably more relaxed and appreciating their own space as they start their new life in their new home but they are not alone – for Sophia, their newly acquired kitten finds the house perfectly suited to her requirements.
